"BHARATA" – we have heard this word so many times and know that it is the original/ancient name for India. But how many of us really know the meaning of the term ‘Bharata’?
The term ‘Bharata’ is derived from two Sanskrit words/roots: ‘bha’ that means light or knowledge or illumination or wisdom, and ‘rata’ that means ‘one who is engrossed in or devoted to’. Thus ‘Bharata’ means the "one devoted to or engrossed in knowledge/wisdom".
Isn't it a beautiful meaning which makes us proud (especially if we are Indians)? This word itself gives us a direction to diligently pursue the illuminating light of wisdom or knowledge (be it in any field whether material or spiritual) and thereby empower our lives for the better.
